Rhodobacter capsulatus is a photosynthetic bacterium that, while biologically significant for its metabolic versatility, can occasionally act as a plant pathogen under stressful environmental conditions. In agricultural ecosystems, its opportunistic nature allows it to disrupt the balance of the plant rhizosphere, leading to reduced vitality and various physiological disorders in host plants.
The host range primarily includes greenhouse-grown vegetables and various ornamental plants. By colonizing the root system and invading vascular tissues, the bacterium interferes with the transport of nutrients and water throughout the plant. This disruption is particularly detrimental to young seedlings, where infection can lead to stunted growth and stunted root development.
Visible symptoms often start with a slight yellowing or chlorosis of the lower leaves, followed by progressive wilting. Transmission occurs mainly through contaminated irrigation water, infected soil particles, and unsterilized gardening tools used during routine maintenance.
Effective control measures focus on preventive agronomic practices such as ensuring optimal soil drainage and maintaining proper greenhouse ventilation. Sterilizing equipment and removing infected plant debris immediately are essential steps to curb the spread. Integrated pest management, including the use of competitive biological agents, is recommended to minimize the impact of this pathogen on total crop yields.
