Rhodococcus equi is a gram-positive soil bacterium that primarily exists as a zoonotic pathogen but also acts as an opportunistic phytopathogen affecting various agricultural crops. Its structural resilience, provided by the presence of mycolic acids in its cell wall, allows it to survive in diverse environmental conditions, making it a persistent challenge for modern crop management systems.
The host range of Rhodococcus equi includes various vegetables and field crops that interact with the bacterium through their rhizosphere. The infection process is typically initiated when the roots are stressed or injured, allowing the pathogen to colonize the root cortex and interfere with the uptake of water and essential mineral nutrients.
