Rice herbaceous is a severe phytoplasma-induced disease that significantly impacts rice production in many tropical regions. The causal agent, a phytoplasma, colonizes the phloem of the host plant, leading to systemic infection and irreversible physiological disorders that alter the plant's growth pattern.
This pathogen specifically targets rice plants. The transmission of the disease is mediated primarily by insect vectors, most notably the brown planthopper (Nilaparvata lugens). These insects acquire the phytoplasma by feeding on infected phloem sap and transmit it to healthy plants during subsequent feeding events.
The most characteristic symptom of the disease is extreme stunting and excessive tillering, which gives the plant a grass-like appearance. Affected plants exhibit yellowing (chlorosis) of the leaves and usually fail to produce healthy panicles, or if panicles do develop, they remain sterile and unproductive.
Environmental conditions that favor the rapid multiplication of planthoppers, such as high humidity and temperature, directly correlate with the spread of Rice herbaceous. The presence of alternative host plants and weeds near paddy fields acts as a reservoir for the pathogen during the off-season, facilitating new infections.
