Rivulariaceae is a family of filamentous cyanobacteria that, when occurring in mass quantities, can negatively impact agricultural production. While they are a natural component of many ecosystems, their rapid proliferation on soil surfaces or in water-logged agricultural systems can inhibit the growth of crops.

These organisms are characterized by the production of large amounts of extracellular slime, forming colonies that attach to surfaces. Their biological activity can alter the local environment, specifically by competing for sunlight and nutrients with young crop plants during the early stages of development.

Crops most affected by these cyanobacteria are those grown in saturated environments, such as rice paddies, as well as plants in humid greenhouse conditions. In such environments, the mass growth of Rivulariaceae acts as a barrier, causing physiological stress to the crop root systems due to limited oxygen exchange.

Symptoms of an outbreak include the visual presence of dark green or blue-green slimy layers on the soil substrate. As the environment dries, these layers harden into crusts that impede seed germination and the emergence of seedlings, creating a micro-environment that can harbor harmful fungi and bacteria.

Management and prevention focus on disrupting the conditions that favor cyanobacterial growth. Key practices include:

  • Improving soil drainage and aeration.
  • Regulating irrigation schedules to prevent prolonged surface saturation.
  • Using copper-based algicides where necessary and permissible.
  • Maintaining optimal soil pH to reduce colonization potential.
Preventive monitoring is crucial to stop these colonies from reaching harmful densities.
