Description

Schizothrix is a genus of filamentous cyanobacteria that, in an agricultural context, is classified as a soil algal infestation. While not a classic plant pathogen, its rapid proliferation on the soil surface creates an algal crust that significantly impedes the physiological development of greenhouse and nursery crops.

The primary crops affected by Schizothrix include vegetable seedlings, young trees in nurseries, and plants grown in hydroculture or on peat-based substrates. The presence of these organisms is particularly detrimental during the early stages of growth when the plant root system is highly sensitive to soil aeration levels.

The visible symptoms of infestation appear as dark green, blue-green, or brownish slime that dries into a dense, water-repellent crust. This crust effectively seals the soil surface, preventing gas exchange between the soil and the atmosphere. As a result, the roots suffer from hypoxia, leading to stunted growth, nutrient deficiencies, and increased susceptibility to damping-off fungi.

The development of Schizothrix is favored by specific environmental conditions, including excessive moisture, poor drainage, high light intensity in greenhouses, and high concentrations of nutrients (particularly nitrogen and phosphorus) on the soil surface. Poor airflow and stagnant water create the ideal habitat for these cyanobacteria to bloom.

Control and preventive measures include:

  • Regular cultivation and surface hoeing to break up the algal crust.
  • Optimizing irrigation practices to allow the surface of the growing medium to dry out periodically.
  • Improving greenhouse ventilation to reduce relative humidity.
  • Using mulch or inert top dressing to block light from the soil surface.
  • Monitoring soil nutrient levels to prevent surface accumulation.
