The causative agent of this disease is the Carrot mottle virus, scientifically identified as Sequivirus carotae. It is a plant virus that systemically infects tissues, leading to significant physiological stress in the host. The transmission of this pathogen is primarily mediated by insect vectors, which acquire the virus while feeding on infected plant sap.

The primary host for this virus is cultivated carrot (Daucus carota). However, wild relatives of the carrot family can also act as reservoirs for the pathogen, allowing it to persist in the environment even when main crops are not present. This makes managing wild vegetation around cultivated fields a crucial part of the agricultural process.

Symptoms of the infection typically manifest as mottled or chlorotic spots on the leaves. As the disease progresses, leaves may show signs of yellowing, curling, or overall stunting. Infected plants often produce smaller, misshapen taproots, which negatively impacts both the yield quantity and the commercial quality of the harvest.

Development and spread of Sequivirus carotae are highly dependent on the population dynamics of its primary vector, the carrot aphid. Environmental conditions that favor the rapid reproduction and migration of aphids directly correlate with increased incidence rates in carrot fields. Warm and dry weather conditions are generally the most conducive to viral spread.
