It is crucial to understand that Shigella does not infect plants as a classic phytopathogen, but rather colonizes their surfaces, posing a severe threat to food safety protocols.

Contamination pathways are diverse and typically involve contaminated irrigation water, the use of improperly composted manure, or unsanitary conditions during harvesting and packaging. Once introduced into the field, these bacteria can survive on the surface of plant tissues, particularly in sheltered areas such as leaf axils or microscopic structural imperfections.
