The organism is a Gram-negative, rod-shaped bacterium. In the agricultural environment, it acts as a transient contaminant that can adhere to the surface of harvested produce. Contamination typically occurs when crops are exposed to contaminated irrigation water, manure used as fertilizer, or through poor hygiene practices during the harvest and packaging processes.
Crops most susceptible to surface contamination include leafy greens (such as spinach and lettuce), fresh herbs, and small fruits like strawberries that are consumed raw. Because these crops are grown close to the ground, they are highly exposed to environmental pathogens if agricultural sanitary standards are not rigorously maintained.
There are no visible symptoms of Shigella dysenteriae infection in plants, as the bacterium does not penetrate or infect plant tissues. The plants remain aesthetically normal, showing no lesions, wilting, or discoloration. Therefore, the contamination is invisible and can only be detected through specialized microbiological laboratory tests.

Farmers must ensure the quality of irrigation water, implement proper composting of manure to eliminate pathogens, and strictly adhere to personnel hygiene standards.
