Fuligo

Description

Fuligo, scientifically known as Fuligo septica or the "dog vomit slime mold," is a fascinating but problematic organism belonging to the class Myxomycetes. While not a parasitic fungus, it can significantly impact the health of plants by physically covering them, hindering photosynthesis, and creating a favorable microenvironment for other decay-causing pathogens.

This organism affects a wide variety of plant species, including highly sensitive ones like Cattleya orchids, garden strawberries, and sweet potato vines. It is particularly common in environments where organic matter is abundant and moisture levels are consistently high, making it a frequent guest in greenhouses and moist vegetable patches.

Symptoms are easily identifiable: the organism appears as a bright yellow, orange, or white frothy mass with a sponge-like texture. As it matures, it moves across the soil surface or plant stems, potentially engulfing leaves near the ground. Eventually, it produces a dry, powdery surface as the spores prepare to disperse into the environment.

The development of Fuligo is driven by high humidity and poor ventilation, which allow the plasmodium stage to thrive. Temperatures ranging from 20°C to 30°C and a high supply of decaying plant material provide the perfect conditions for a rapid outbreak. It often enters growing areas through contaminated potting mixes or water sources.

Management and prevention require strict attention to sanitation and environment:

  • Maintain proper air circulation around plants to keep the foliage and soil surface dry.
  • Remove any decaying organic debris, old mulch, or rotten wood from the growing area.
  • Adjust watering schedules to prevent waterlogging and reduce ambient humidity.
  • Physically remove slime patches and treat the affected area with copper-based fungicides if necessary.
