Description

Snow blight, caused by the fungus Phacidium abietis, is a significant disease affecting coniferous species. This pathogen is particularly well-adapted to surviving and spreading under snow cover, where it actively colonizes the foliage of susceptible trees during winter and early spring.

The disease primarily impacts young conifers, including various species of spruce, fir, pine, and Douglas Fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii). It poses a major threat to nursery stocks and young forest plantations, where it can cause widespread needle cast and stunted growth.

Symptoms become apparent immediately after snowmelt. Infected needles turn reddish-brown or greyish-brown and often appear matted. Small, black fungal fruiting bodies (apothecia) develop on the undersides of the needles. In severe cases, the entire branch or the terminal shoots may die, leading to significant structural damage to the tree.

The development of Phacidium abietis is highly dependent on environmental conditions. It thrives in cool, humid conditions under a persistent snowpack. The infection cycle usually begins in the autumn, allowing the fungus to establish itself, followed by rapid spread between needles during the late winter and early spring thaws.

Management and prevention focus on creating conditions that are unfavorable for fungal growth. Key practices include:

  • Maintaining proper spacing in nurseries to improve air circulation;
  • Ensuring good site drainage to reduce humidity;
  • Applying preventive fungicides during the autumn season before the first snowfall;
  • Removing and destroying heavily infected plant material to reduce spore load in the area.
