It is a highly specialized plant pathogen that primarily affects the needles of coniferous species, specifically those of the genus Abies. It is recognized as a serious threat to nurseries and young forest plantations.
Diseases and host plants: This fungus is the causal agent of fir needle blight or "snow blight". The primary hosts are various species of fir (Abies spp.). The disease manifests as needle discoloration, wilting, and premature shedding, which significantly weakens the trees and can lead to widespread necrosis in young stands during late winter and early spring.
Biology and life cycle: The life cycle of Phacidium abietis is uniquely adapted to snowy conditions. Infection occurs during the autumn months when temperatures drop. The fungus continues to grow and spread its mycelium beneath the snow cover. When the snow melts, apothecia develop on the infected needles, releasing spores that facilitate the spread of the disease to adjacent healthy foliage.

Control and prevention measures: Effective management requires a combination of strict sanitation and preventive chemical application:
- Ensuring the use of disease-free planting stock.
- Implementing wide spacing in nurseries to improve air circulation.

- Removing and destroying infected debris to prevent the buildup of inoculum in the environment.
