Sorangium is a genus of myxobacteria that typically inhabit the soil. While these microorganisms primarily function as decomposers, they can occasionally act as opportunistic pathogens in agricultural settings, particularly when environmental conditions allow them to compromise the structural integrity of plant roots.

The causative agent, Sorangium cellulosum, is a fascinating bacterium known for its ability to digest cellulose. In the context of plant health, this activity can be detrimental if the bacteria colonize the rhizosphere of stressed or susceptible crops. They move via gliding motility and form complex fruiting bodies that make them resilient to various environmental stressors.

This pathogen affects a wide range of plants, including cereals and leafy vegetables. Crops grown in waterlogged, poorly aerated soils rich in undecomposed organic matter are at the highest risk. The bacteria invade the roots, utilizing the plant's structural components as a carbon source, which leads to the breakdown of the root system.

Symptoms of an infection include stunted growth, chlorosis, and general wilting despite adequate moisture. On closer inspection, the root systems appear brown, soft, or necrotic. In severe cases, the plant can no longer absorb water or nutrients effectively, leading to eventual death or significant yield reduction in commercial farming.

The development of the disease is favored by temperatures between 20°C and 30°C and high soil moisture levels. Sorangium spreads easily through irrigation water, contaminated tools, and movement of soil between fields. The economic damage is attributed to poor crop establishment and reduced final harvest quality.
