Sowbane mosaic virus

Sowbane spp.

Description

Sowbane mosaic virus (SoMV) is a significant plant pathogen that causes systemic viral infections in a variety of agricultural and horticultural crops. Classified within the Secoviridae family, this virus interferes with the host plant's physiological functions, leading to impaired growth and reduced agricultural productivity.

The host range of the virus includes several economically important crops such as potatoes, sugar beets, spinach, and grapevine. Furthermore, numerous weed species, particularly within the Chenopodium genus, serve as perennial reservoirs for the virus, allowing it to survive periods when no susceptible crops are planted.

The clinical symptoms of the disease are characterized by chlorotic spotting, mosaic patterns on leaves, and occasional leaf deformation. As the infection progresses systemically, affected plants exhibit stunted growth, reduced biomass, and diminished fruit or tuber quality, which directly impacts the commercial value of the harvested crop.

Transmission of the virus occurs via several routes, most notably through mechanical injury and contact between healthy and diseased plants. Seed transmission is also a critical factor in the dissemination of SoMV across different geographic areas. Insect vectors, such as aphids, play a vital role in the rapid spread of the virus within and between fields during the growing season.

Effective management and prevention strategies are essential to mitigate the impact of the virus:

  • Utilization of virus-free certified seeds and planting materials.
  • Rigorous weed control programs to eliminate host reservoirs around crop fields.
  • Implementation of insect management protocols to control aphid populations.
  • Strict sanitation measures for farming equipment to prevent mechanical transmission.
  • Crop rotation practices to reduce the concentration of viral inoculum in the environment.
