Description
Sphingobacteriosis is a plant pathology caused by bacteria belonging to the order Sphingobacteriales. These microorganisms are common soil dwellers that can transition to a pathogenic state when the host plant is stressed, compromised by unfavorable growing conditions, or physically damaged.
The disease affects a wide variety of plants, particularly focusing on vegetable crops and ornamental flowers grown in greenhouses or fields with high humidity. The bacteria primarily colonize the rhizosphere, leading to physiological disruptions that impair nutrient and water uptake from the soil.
Clinical signs of infection include stunted growth, chlorosis, and gradual wilting of the leaves, starting from the base of the plant. In advanced stages, root rot occurs, resulting in a foul odor and tissue softening, which effectively destroys the plant's ability to maintain its structural integrity.
The spread of the pathogen is highly dependent on environmental factors, particularly excessive soil moisture and poor air circulation. Contaminated irrigation systems, infested soil, and handling by agricultural workers are the primary vectors for transmission within a crop production site.
Effective management requires an integrated strategy to minimize bacterial populations. Key practices include improving soil aeration, implementing rigorous sanitation protocols for all tools, and ensuring optimal irrigation management to avoid waterlogging. When necessary, the use of certified antibacterial treatments or biological control agents can help suppress the spread and protect yield quality.
