Sphingomonas is a genus of Gram-negative aerobic bacteria that are often regarded in agronomy as opportunistic phytopathogens or associated microorganisms. While some strains of this genus are utilized as beneficial endophytes or bioremediators, specific Sphingomonas strains can trigger pathological processes, compromising the plant's immune system and causing rots or leaf spots.
The type of disease caused by these bacteria is classified as a bacteriosis. The pathogen enters plant tissues through natural openings like stomata or mechanical wounds, subsequently colonizing the intercellular space. During this phase, it secretes specific enzymes that degrade the host's cell walls, leading to tissue structural failure.
A wide variety of vegetable, fruit, and ornamental crops are susceptible to these infections. Plants that are already weakened by poor crop rotation, nutrient deficiencies, or excessive humidity are the most vulnerable. The bacteria can affect both the aerial parts and the root system, severely disrupting the host's photosynthesis and metabolic processes.
Symptoms of the infection typically include the appearance of water-soaked spots that darken over time, tissue necrosis, and characteristic wilting of specific stems or shoots. In severe cases, soft rot occurs, often accompanied by an unpleasant odor. High temperatures (above 20°C) and high relative humidity are critical environmental conditions that facilitate the rapid development and spread of the pathogen.
