Description

Plant spiroplasmosis is a serious condition caused by Spiroplasma species, which are members of the Spirochaetaceae family. These are helical, motile bacteria that lack a cell wall and reside within the phloem of infected plants. They are specialized plant pathogens that rely entirely on the vascular system of their hosts for nutrition and survival.

This pathogen affects a wide variety of crops worldwide, including corn (causing corn stunt disease), citrus (citrus stubborn disease), and various vegetables. The damage caused by these pathogens is significant, often leading to total loss of marketability for fruit or severe reduction in grain yields, threatening the profitability of commercial agricultural operations.

Symptoms of infection are highly distinct and typically involve stunted growth, leaf chlorosis, and excessive proliferation of shoots, commonly referred to as "witches' broom." Plants often exhibit severe chlorotic patterns, shortened internodes, and, in fruit-bearing plants, the production of small, malformed, or poor-tasting fruits.

The transmission of the disease is dependent on insect vectors, primarily leafhoppers. The bacteria multiply within the vector's body, and once the insect acquires the pathogen, it remains infectious for life. Environmental conditions such as moderate temperatures and high humidity significantly increase the activity of these vectors, leading to faster spreading of the disease within fields.

Management of spiroplasmosis requires an integrated approach. Because there is no chemical cure for an infected plant, prevention is the primary strategy. This includes sourcing certified disease-free planting material, implementing rigorous weed control programs to eliminate alternative hosts, and utilizing systematic insecticide applications to manage the populations of insect vectors effectively.
