The family Spirulinaceae refers to a group of filamentous cyanobacteria known for their spiral morphology. The development of these organisms is a natural process often triggered by nutrient loading in stagnant water. They are photosynthetic prokaryotes that thrive in aquatic environments. In agricultural settings, their massive proliferation can lead to clogging issues in advanced irrigation infrastructure, such as drip lines and sprinkler nozzles.
Symptoms of their presence include a visible dense green or blue-green matte on the water surface and potential toxic metabolites released during decomposition. Crops irrigated with water heavily contaminated by these algae may experience reduced nutrient uptake, and the physical presence of the filaments can severely restrict water flow to the root zone.
Optimal conditions for growth include warm water temperatures, high levels of nitrates and phosphates, and low water turbulence.
