These bacteria, characterized by their distinct spiral cellular structure, are capable of colonizing host plants and inducing severe physiological damage that leads to systemic decline and significant economic loss in high-value horticultural crops.
The causative agent belongs to the order Spirulinales, a group of bacteria that act as opportunistic parasites. The resulting disease is classified as a bacterial infection. The pathogen colonizes the intercellular spaces, secreting specialized enzymes that degrade plant tissues, thereby impairing the vascular system and disrupting the translocation of essential nutrients and water throughout the plant.
These pathogens predominantly affect greenhouse-grown vegetables and various ornamental plants. The disease typically manifests when environmental conditions, such as high humidity and suboptimal temperature regimes, favor the proliferation of these bacteria. Transmission occurs primarily through contaminated water, agricultural tools, or contact between healthy and infected plant tissue.
Diagnostic indicators and symptoms of infection include:
- characteristic spiral curling of apical leaves and stems;
- presence of water-soaked, greasy lesions on foliage;
- overall stunting and abnormal growth patterns;
- necrosis of leaf margins and localized wilting.
Effective management and prevention strategies focus on strict sanitation protocols and environmental control. Growers are advised to disinfect tools regularly, ensure adequate plant spacing for airflow, and apply appropriate bactericides when early symptoms appear. Removing and destroying infected plant debris is essential to eliminate the primary inoculum source for subsequent crop cycles.
