Description
Sporidesmium sclerotivorum is a specialized mycoparasitic fungus that functions as a natural biological control agent rather than a plant pathogen. Its primary biological role is to infect and destroy the sclerotia of soil-borne plant pathogenic fungi, most notably Sclerotinia sclerotiorum.
The fungus works by colonizing the overwintering structures of the pathogen, known as sclerotia, which reside in the soil. Through enzymatic degradation, Sporidesmium sclerotivorum penetrates the outer rind of the sclerotium, consuming the stored reserves and essentially sterilizing the pathogen so it cannot germinate and infect crops.
It impacts a wide range of economically significant crops susceptible to white mold, including sunflowers, rapeseed, legumes, and various vegetables. By targeting the dormant phase of the disease cycle, this mycoparasite effectively reduces the primary inoculum density in the field, which is essential for long-term disease management.
Development and spread of this fungus are highly dependent on soil environmental conditions, favoring high moisture content and moderate soil temperatures. It actively explores the soil matrix to locate and infect sclerotia, showing high persistence in soil even when host density is temporarily low.
Agricultural application involves integrating this fungus into soil management practices to foster a suppressive soil environment.
