Plant staphylococcosis

Staphylococcaceae

Description

The Staphylococcaceae family consists of bacteria that, under specific conditions, can act as opportunistic pathogens for various plant species. Plant staphylococcosis is a bacterial disease that interferes with normal plant development, damaging vascular structures and leaves. While less common than rod-shaped bacteria, these cocci can cause severe outbreaks in greenhouse and open-field conditions.

This disease targets a wide range of horticultural and agricultural crops, including solanaceous plants and berry bushes. Susceptibility is highest in plants experiencing physiological stress due to improper irrigation, nutrient imbalance, or environmental fluctuations. Infection typically occurs through wounds or natural openings, leading to rapid colonisation of the plant tissues.

Common clinical signs of the infection include the appearance of oily spots that gradually turn into necrotic lesions. These spots are often surrounded by a chlorotic halo. As the pathogen advances into the xylem, the plant exhibits signs of wilting and vascular browning. Severely affected plants show stunted growth, reduced flowering, and fruit decay.

Environmental conditions play a critical role in the development of the disease. High relative humidity and temperatures ranging from 20°C to 28°C create an ideal environment for bacterial multiplication. Dissemination occurs primarily via splashing water, insect vectors, and the use of contaminated pruning tools, which can facilitate the spread across large field areas.

The economic impact is significant, as the infection can render fruits unmarketable and lead to total plant death in sensitive varieties. Effective management strategies involve:

  • Utilizing certified disease-free seeds and planting material.
  • Maintaining optimal sanitation practices for all garden equipment.
  • Implementing precise irrigation to avoid leaf wetness duration.
  • Applying preventive bactericides and biological control agents.
  • Removing and destroying infected plant debris immediately after harvest.
