Strawberry green petal
Strawberry multiplier
Description
Strawberry green petal (also known as Strawberry multiplier) is a severe plant disease caused by phytoplasmas. These specialized pathogens colonize the phloem tissue of the strawberry plant, disrupting the hormonal balance and causing abnormal morphological changes in the floral and vegetative parts of the host.
The primary transmission mechanism for this disease is via insect vectors, specifically leafhoppers (Cicadellidae). When these insects feed on infected plants, they acquire the phytoplasma and subsequently transmit it to healthy strawberry plants during feeding, making the spread of the disease unpredictable and rapid throughout the field.
The most characteristic symptoms appear during the flowering stage, where the petals become green and leaf-like, often leading to the proliferation of the flower parts. Infected plants typically exhibit severe stunting, shortening of petioles, and the development of numerous thin, weak shoots, creating a bushy, broom-like appearance that severely impacts the plant's structural integrity.
The economic impact of this disease is devastating, as infected plants become sterile or produce malformed, inedible berries. Since there is no curative treatment for plants once they are infected with phytoplasmas, the disease often forces growers to destroy entire sections of the plantation to prevent further outbreaks.
Effective management and prevention strategies are essential for controlling the spread of the virus-like symptoms:
- Removal and destruction of infected plants immediately upon detection;
- Strict weed control in and around the plantation to eliminate host reservoirs;
- Management of leafhopper populations using appropriate insecticides;
- Utilization of certified, virus-free nursery stock to ensure the health of the starting crop.
