Plant streptococcosis is a bacterial disease triggered by specific strains of the Streptococcus genus. While historically associated with human and animal pathology, these cocci-shaped bacteria can colonize plant tissues, causing significant physiological damage and necrosis, which poses a threat to agricultural productivity.
The pathogen consists of Gram-positive, facultatively anaerobic bacteria that usually invade the plant through natural openings like stomata or through mechanical wounds caused by agricultural tools or pests. Once inside, they proliferate in the intercellular spaces and vascular system, disrupting the transport of water and essential nutrients.
A variety of crops are susceptible to this infection, particularly vegetables and certain fruit-bearing species. Plants grown in greenhouses or in areas with poor drainage are at higher risk, as the combination of high humidity and moderate temperatures provides an ideal environment for the rapid reproduction of the bacterial colonies.
Symptoms of the disease typically manifest as greasy, water-soaked spots on foliage, which eventually turn brown or black as the tissue dies. In advanced cases, the infection can cause systemic wilting, stunted growth, and soft rot of the root system or stems, leading to severe yield losses if not managed promptly.
