Streptococcosis of plants is a rare but significant bacterial disease caused by pathogens such as Streptococcus pyogenes. Although primarily known as a human pathogen, this bacterium can affect agricultural crops by entering plant tissues and disrupting normal metabolic processes, leading to systemic weakness and tissue necrosis.
The infection is classified as a bacterial wilt or soft rot pathogen, depending on the specific host and environmental context. It primarily affects vegetable and ornamental crops, where the bacteria colonize the intercellular spaces and vascular systems, causing a breakdown of structural integrity and inhibiting nutrient transport throughout the plant.
Symptoms of the disease are characterized by yellowing of the foliage, followed by the development of water-soaked spots that eventually turn brown and necrotic. In many cases, infected plants show premature wilting during hot periods of the day, which can progress to total plant collapse if the infection reaches the root system.

Poor drainage and lack of proper air circulation within greenhouses create an ideal microclimate for the rapid multiplication of the pathogen and its transfer to neighboring healthy plants.

Implementing crop rotation cycles, ensuring proper plant spacing, and utilizing certified, disease-free planting materials remain the most effective preventive strategies against bacterial outbreaks.
