Streptomyces chartreusis is a species of Gram-positive actinomycetes commonly found in soil environments. While many streptomycetes are commercially valuable due to their antibiotic-producing properties, certain strains can exhibit phytopathogenic behavior, negatively impacting the development of various crop plants and leading to significant economic losses in agriculture.

This pathogen primarily targets root crops and tubers, including potatoes, sugar beets, and carrots. The bacteria colonize the host tissues through wounds or natural lenticels, secreting enzymes that degrade cell walls. This process leads to localized tissue necrosis, which compromises the integrity of the root system and reduces the overall storage stability of the harvested produce.

Typical symptoms include the formation of rough, corky, or necrotic lesions on the surface of tubers and roots. In severe cases, the infected areas may crack or become sunken. Infected plants often show signs of stunted growth, leaf chlorosis, and wilting, as the vascular and structural integrity of the root system is damaged by the bacterial activity.
