Description

Streptomyces turgidiscabies is a significant soil-borne pathogen belonging to the Streptomycetaceae family, recognized as one of the primary causative agents of common potato scab. This filamentous bacterium produces specific phytotoxins known as thaxtomins, which disrupt cell wall development in developing tubers, leading to the formation of necrotic lesions on the skin.

The pathogen primarily affects potatoes, but its host range also includes various root vegetables like radish, beet, and turnip. Because it is a facultative saprophyte, the bacterium can survive in the soil for many years by colonizing plant debris, making it a persistent challenge for farmers who practice short crop rotations with susceptible species.

Symptoms of the disease manifest on the surface of tubers. These lesions vary in appearance, ranging from superficial russeting to deep, corky craters or raised, warty scabs. While the internal tissue of the potato remains generally unaffected, the aesthetic degradation caused by the pathogen significantly reduces the marketability and storage life of the harvest.

Environmental conditions play a critical role in the severity of the outbreak. The pathogen thrives in relatively dry, warm soil with a neutral or alkaline pH. Management of soil moisture during the tuber initiation stage is essential, as this is when tubers are most susceptible to infection by the bacteria residing in the top layers of the soil.

Effective control measures focus on integrated management strategies. These include selecting resistant potato cultivars, maintaining acidic soil conditions (pH below 5.5), and utilizing long-term crop rotation cycles that include non-host green manure crops. Avoidance of excessive liming and the use of healthy, certified seed tubers are fundamental to preventing the spread of the pathogen in agricultural fields.
