Streptomyces viridochromogenes is a soil-dwelling bacterium belonging to the actinomycetes group. While many actinomycetes are beneficial to soil health, this specific species is recognized as a potential phytopathogen capable of causing significant lesions on various plant tissues, often leading to conditions collectively referred to as streptomycosis.

This pathogen primarily targets root crops and underground plant parts. It is frequently observed affecting potatoes, sugar beets, carrots, and various bulbous vegetables. The infection typically initiates when the bacteria invade healthy tissue through natural openings or mechanical wounds created by nematodes, insects, or agricultural machinery.

Visible symptoms of the infection include the formation of localized scabs, pits, or irregular lesions on the surface of the roots or tubers. These symptoms compromise the quality and appearance of the harvest, often leading to softening of tissues and creating pathways for opportunistic rot-causing bacteria and fungi to invade during storage.

The development and spread of the disease are heavily influenced by soil conditions. A neutral or slightly alkaline pH environment, combined with high soil temperatures and intermittent moisture levels, creates an ideal habitat for the proliferation of this pathogen. It is highly persistent and can survive in the soil as spores for several seasons.

Effective management strategies require a combination of preventative agricultural practices. Farmers should prioritize long-term crop rotation cycles, implement soil amendments to maintain a slightly acidic pH, and avoid over-fertilizing with fresh manure. Furthermore, integrating biological control agents that compete with actinomycetes in the rhizosphere can significantly mitigate the risk of infection.
