Description
Sugarcane mosaic is a serious plant disease caused by the Sugarcane mosaic virus (SCMV), a member of the Potyvirus genus. The virus causes a systemic infection in host plants, leading to severe physiological disruption and impairment of the plant's metabolic functions.
The disease primarily affects sugarcane, maize, sorghum, and various wild grass species. These crops act as both hosts and reservoirs, allowing the virus to persist in agricultural landscapes across different growing seasons.
The diagnostic symptoms of the disease include the development of light green to yellow patches on the leaves, creating a classic mosaic pattern. Infected plants often exhibit stunted growth, leaf deformation, shortened internodes, and reduced overall vigor, which significantly impairs their development.
Transmission occurs primarily through aphid vectors in a non-persistent manner, as well as through infected planting materials. The spread of the disease is highly dependent on environmental conditions that favor aphid activity, such as warm temperatures and the availability of secondary hosts near crop fields.
