Description
Sugarcane white leaf is a destructive systemic disease caused by phytoplasmas, which are specialized bacteria lacking cell walls. These pathogens reside within the plant's phloem, severely disrupting the translocation of nutrients and leading to the characteristic chlorotic symptoms that give the disease its name.
The primary host for this pathogen is the sugarcane plant (Saccharum species). The disease significantly hinders the plant's ability to produce sugars, which is the primary economic goal of sugarcane cultivation. In severe cases, the entire plantation can suffer from stunted growth and total loss of harvest potential.
The disease is marked by the appearance of distinct white or creamy-yellow stripes on the leaves. As the infection progresses, the leaves become entirely bleached. Infected plants often show excessive side-shooting, giving them a bushy appearance, while the canes themselves become thin, woody, and yield little to no sugar.
Transmission is primarily facilitated by insect vectors, specifically leafhoppers such as Matsumuratettix hiroglyphicus. These insects acquire the phytoplasma while feeding on infected sap and transmit it to healthy plants during subsequent feedings. Weather conditions like high temperatures and humidity strongly favor the activity of these vectors.
Managing Sugarcane white leaf relies heavily on integrated pest management strategies. Because no cure exists for infected plants, the focus must be on prevention: using certified disease-free sets for planting, eliminating reservoir hosts in the surrounding area, and controlling vector populations with targeted insecticide applications. Strict sanitary protocols are essential to prevent the spread of the pathogen to new, healthy fields.
