Sugarcane yellows is a debilitating systemic plant disease primarily caused by phytoplasmas, which are specialized bacteria-like organisms. These pathogens colonize the phloem tissues of the host plant, effectively disrupting the translocation of essential nutrients and photosynthates from the leaves to the root system and developing stalks.

The disease primarily affects sugarcane plants (Saccharum spp.). Due to its systemic nature, the pathogen invades the entire vascular system, rendering the cane stalks stunted and significantly reducing the sucrose content, which is a critical concern for sugar processing and commercial profitability.

Visible symptoms typically begin with the chlorosis (yellowing) of the leaves, starting from the tips and extending along the leaf margins. As the disease progresses, the plant exhibits signs of severe stress, including stunted growth, reduced stalk diameter, and an overall lack of vigor in the crop stand.

The transmission of sugarcane yellows is largely dependent on insect vectors, most notably various species of leafhoppers. These insects acquire the phytoplasma while feeding on infected cane and transmit it to healthy plants. Additionally, the use of infected vegetative cuttings (setts) for propagation is a primary driver of disease spread in new fields.

Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for controlling this disease. Key strategies include:

  • Selection and planting of pathogen-free seed cane.
  • Application of systemic insecticides to manage leafhopper populations.
  • Regular roguing and destruction of symptomatic plants.
  • Breeding and utilizing sugarcane varieties with proven resistance or tolerance to phytoplasma infections.
