Sydowiella cane canker, caused by the fungus Sydowiella depressula, is a significant disease affecting raspberry plants. This fungal pathogen targets the canes, leading to localized tissue necrosis, which can result in the partial or total death of affected branches and a significant decrease in the quality and quantity of the fruit crop.
The primary host for this disease is the common raspberry. The infection typically manifests on biennial canes, impacting their ability to conduct water and essential nutrients effectively. When the cane's vascular system is compromised, the plant struggles to support the fruit, leading to withered, stunted, or dry berries during the ripening phase.
Visible symptoms of the disease include the development of necrotic spots on the cane epidermis. These spots often progress into depressed lesions or cankers that may crack the cane surface. Tiny, dark structures, known as perithecia, appear within the lesions, serving as the fungal reproductive bodies that allow the pathogen to survive the winter and re-infect the plant in the following season.
