Description
Synechococcaceae represents a family of unicellular cyanobacteria that act as opportunistic contaminants in agricultural settings, particularly within controlled environment agriculture such as hydroponics and aquaponics. While not traditional plant pathogens, their presence induces abiotic stress, leading to physiological disorders that mimic classic plant diseases.
These organisms primarily affect high-value crops including leafy greens and solanaceous vegetables grown in aqueous media. By forming robust biofilms on roots, they interfere with the rhizosphere's natural function. This biofilm creates a physical barrier that prevents efficient nutrient uptake, leading to localized starvation and stunted development of the plant.
Symptoms include the formation of a slick, blue-green or dark green film on roots and irrigation channels. Affected plants typically show signs of nitrogen and iron deficiency, such as yellowing of the foliage, followed by root browning and decay. If untreated, the system may suffer from decreased oxygen levels, leading to further root rot pathogen proliferation.
The development of these cyanobacteria is triggered by high light intensity hitting the nutrient solution, elevated water temperatures exceeding 25°C, and excessive nutrient load (eutrophication). Lack of water circulation and improper disinfection of recycled nutrient streams allow these bacteria to thrive and colonize the entire root zone of a crop.
Control strategies emphasize preventative maintenance. This includes light-tight storage of nutrient reservoirs to eliminate photosynthesis by the bacteria. Furthermore, growers should implement UV sterilization, ozone treatment, or hydrogen peroxide-based cleaning agents to eliminate biofilm formation. Regular monitoring of water quality and system sterilization between harvest cycles are crucial to managing this issue.
