Synechococcus is a genus of unicellular cyanobacteria that can significantly impact plant health, particularly in controlled-environment agriculture. While widely studied as part of marine and freshwater ecosystems, in agronomy, these bacteria are known for forming biofilm-like clusters that interfere with root absorption and hydroponic system efficiency.

The pathogenicity of this organism stems from its ability to proliferate rapidly in high-nutrient environments. By creating physical barriers on the root surface, Synechococcus hinders gas exchange and nutrient uptake, which essentially weakens the plant and leaves it vulnerable to secondary infections by opportunistic fungi or rot-causing bacteria.

Target crops include those cultivated in hydroponic, aeroponic, or greenhouse systems, such as lettuce, tomatoes, and various herbs. The presence of these cyanobacteria in circulating nutrient solutions disrupts the chemical balance and can lead to rapid deterioration of the plant's physiological status.

Common signs of infestation include:

  • Green or blue-green slimy layers on roots or substrates.
  • General chlorosis or pale foliage appearance.
  • Stunted root development and reduced overall biomass.
  • Wilting in plants despite adequate irrigation.

Effective management requires rigorous sanitation. Producers should implement UV sterilization of nutrient solutions, regular cleaning of irrigation pipes, and the use of bio-active inhibitors that specifically target cyanobacterial growth. Monitoring water quality parameters is crucial to prevent outbreaks that could compromise commercial yields.
