Synechococcus aeruginosus is a species of unicellular cyanobacteria that can pose significant challenges in agricultural production, particularly in hydroponic systems and nursery operations. While naturally occurring in aquatic environments, its presence in managed crop systems often indicates an imbalance that can lead to detrimental effects on plant vitality.

As a photosynthetic pathogen, this organism thrives in nutrient-rich and well-lit environments. When it colonizes the root zone or nutrient reservoirs, it functions as an opportunistic pathogen that outcompetes beneficial rhizosphere microbes and alters the chemical environment of the root zone, negatively impacting nutrient uptake efficiency.

The cultures most frequently affected include lettuce, herbs, and young vegetable seedlings grown in water-based media. The presence of the bacteria is often exacerbated by poorly sanitized irrigation lines or the use of stagnant water sources that have been exposed to high light levels, facilitating the rapid growth of cyanobacterial biofilms.

Symptoms of infestation are easily identifiable: the formation of a distinct green, slimy film on growing media or root systems is the primary indicator. Infected plants typically exhibit slow growth, nutrient deficiency symptoms (such as chlorosis), and root rot, which occurs as a secondary consequence of the bacterial biofilm blocking essential gas exchange.

Effective management requires a multi-faceted approach centered on strict water quality control. Implementing UV filtration, regular reservoir cleaning, and light-blocking covers for nutrient tanks are essential preventative measures. Furthermore, maintaining proper pH and nutrient ratios prevents the environment from becoming overly favorable for the proliferation of this cyanobacteria.
