Synechococcus is a genus of cyanobacteria that, under certain agricultural conditions, behaves as an opportunistic plant pathogen. While essential for aquatic ecosystems, these bacteria can reach high densities in agricultural systems, leading to significant economic losses in water-dependent crops.
The pathogen is a single-celled bacterium capable of forming biofilms on submerged plant surfaces. This biological type of infection acts as a physical and chemical barrier, preventing the plant from absorbing oxygen and necessary minerals, which is common in intensive hydroponic production.
Crops primarily affected by Synechococcus include rice cultivated in flooded conditions and various vegetables in hydroponic systems. The bacteria thrive in environments with high nutrient availability and stable light, making intensive greenhouse production particularly susceptible to colonization.
Symptoms of the infection generally manifest through the following observations:
- Formation of a visible green, slimy layer on the root system.
- Browning and necrosis of small root hairs due to oxygen deprivation.
- Stunted growth of the stem and leaf canopy.
- Reduced crop yield due to chronic nutrient deficiency caused by bacterial interference.

Recommended actions include the installation of UV-C sterilizers in recirculating water systems, meticulous monitoring of nutrient solution chemistry, and maintaining the cleanliness of irrigation equipment.
