Synechocystis aquatilis is a species of unicellular cyanobacteria that functions as an agricultural pathogen in aquatic environments and hydroponic cultivation systems. While it does not infect terrestrial plant tissues directly, its presence is highly detrimental to plant growth due to competition for nutrients and the production of allelopathic compounds.

The causative agent belongs to the phylum Cyanobacteria. It propagates through simple binary fission, allowing it to colonize irrigation channels, reservoirs, and nutrient solutions with extreme speed. It thrives by creating dense biofilms that restrict gas exchange for plant roots submerged in water.

Crops primarily affected include rice (Oryza sativa) and various leafy greens grown via hydroponic methods. Symptoms of infestation involve the formation of a dark green, often slimy layer on the water surface and on irrigation equipment, accompanied by root discoloration and a noticeable reduction in the plant's overall uptake of essential minerals.

Development is accelerated by high temperatures (25-30°C) and high nutrient concentrations, particularly nitrates and phosphates originating from fertilizers. Excessive light intensity also stimulates the photosynthetic activity of the cyanobacteria, leading to rapid bloom formation, especially in stagnant or poorly circulated water bodies.

Economic damage is significant, as Synechocystis aquatilis can clog micro-irrigation nozzles and introduce toxins into the root zone, potentially causing yield losses. Preventive strategies are vital and focus on water quality management. This includes the application of specialized algaecides, maintaining optimal pH levels, and implementing frequent monitoring of water chemistry to prevent the nutrient spikes that trigger rapid proliferation.
