Description
Pathogen and disease type. Tenuivirus echinochloae is a viral pathogen classified within the genus Tenuivirus. It causes a systemic disease that primarily affects the vascular system of the host plant. The virus interferes with the translocation of photosynthetic products and amino acids, leading to severe physiological disruptions within the plant tissue, which is typical for tenuiviruses transmitted by sap-sucking insects.
Host plants. The primary reservoir for this virus is barnyard grass (Echinochloa crus-galli), a common weed in agricultural landscapes. While it prefers these grass species, the virus can spill over into economically significant crops, particularly rice and various forage cereals. The coexistence of cultivated cereals with infested wild grasses is the primary driver of disease outbreaks in agricultural fields.
Symptoms and signs. Infected plants exhibit classic viral symptoms such as chlorotic streaking along the leaf veins, which often results in a mosaic or striped appearance. Severe infections lead to stunting, reduced tiller production, and malformed panicles. The reduced vigor of the plant results in poor grain filling and substantial biomass loss, ultimately affecting the overall yield of the affected crop.
Conditions for development. The virus is transmitted by planthoppers (leafhoppers), which act as both vectors and secondary hosts for the pathogen. Environmental conditions that favor the rapid reproduction and movement of these vectors, such as warm temperatures and high humidity, significantly increase the risk of disease spread. Once the vectors arrive in a crop field, they can quickly transmit the virus during their feeding process.
Harmfulness and preventive measures. Tenuivirus echinochloae can cause heavy economic losses in cereal production. Prevention is critical because direct chemical treatment for the virus itself is not available. Recommended strategies include:
- Effective weed management to eliminate Echinochloa species in and around the field.
- Timely application of insecticides to reduce vector populations during the peak migration window.
- Utilization of resistant or tolerant crop varieties.
- Implementation of clean field practices to minimize the risk of secondary infections from adjacent areas.
