Thermoactinomycetaceae is a family of thermophilic actinobacteria known for their ability to thrive in high-temperature environments. While they are crucial for the natural degradation of organic matter in compost heaps, their presence in greenhouse substrates can become problematic for plant health, leading to specific agricultural challenges.
These pathogens are Gram-positive, spore-forming bacteria that flourish at temperatures between 45 and 60 degrees Celsius. In agricultural systems, they act as opportunists that multiply rapidly in insufficiently stabilized compost or soil mixtures that undergo intense self-heating, releasing chemical byproducts that affect plant physiology.
Crops most frequently affected include vegetables and ornamentals grown in containerized or greenhouse substrates. The presence of these bacteria often indicates poor substrate management, where the breakdown of organic components generates excessive heat, creating a stressful environment for the plants' root systems.
Symptoms of infestation include root browning, reduced nutrient uptake, and overall plant stunting. As the roots are compromised, the plants exhibit wilting even under sufficient irrigation. In professional environments, these bacteria are also monitored due to the potential respiratory risks they pose to greenhouse workers when spores become airborne.
Management strategies focus on proper composting techniques to ensure complete biological stability before substrate use. Preventive measures include pasteurization of growing media, maintaining adequate soil aeration to prevent anaerobic conditions and extreme heat pockets, and the application of beneficial microbial inoculants to suppress the growth of thermophilic pathogens.
