Thermomonosporosis is a plant and organic matter disease caused by thermophilic actinobacteria of the Thermomonosporaceae family. These microorganisms are well-adapted to high-temperature environments, making them particularly problematic in industrial composting systems, grain storage facilities, and heated greenhouses where organic substrates are used.

The primary pathogens belong to the Thermomonospora genus. These bacteria are gram-positive and form extensive mycelium-like structures. In agricultural settings, they act as decomposers of organic matter but can become pathogenic when they invade the root systems of stressed plants or colonize seeds and seedlings under unfavorable environmental conditions.

The most susceptible crops include greenhouse vegetables, such as tomatoes and cucumbers, as well as nursery seedlings. Additionally, stored agricultural products like grain, straw, and hay are highly prone to infection if the moisture content and temperature levels are not properly managed, leading to significant economic losses during post-harvest storage.

Symptoms of thermomonosporosis manifest as root rot, stunted growth, and a visible yellowish-white powdery growth on the surface of the soil or substrate. In storage, the presence of the pathogen is often identified by the spontaneous heating of the biomass, a condition commonly referred to as "self-heating," which releases spores and reduces the quality of the raw material.

Preventive measures focus on maintaining optimal environmental parameters. Key strategies include:

  • Effective sterilization of greenhouse substrates and containers.
  • Monitoring moisture levels in storage to prevent self-heating.
  • Using biocontrol agents to create a suppressive environment for thermophilic bacteria.
  • Proper ventilation and temperature regulation in growing facilities.

Management of this condition requires an integrated approach. By focusing on hygiene, temperature control, and moisture management, farmers can significantly reduce the risk of outbreaks. Continuous monitoring of substrates is essential for early detection, as the rapid growth rate of Thermomonosporaceae can lead to crop failure within a very short timeframe if left untreated.
