Thermoprotei are a class of thermophilic archaea that are occasionally identified in specialized agricultural systems where high temperatures and sulfur-rich environments occur. While not classified as typical plant pathogens in standard field crops, they can disrupt soil chemistry and root health in highly specific environments, such as geothermal greenhouses or industrial soil heating systems.

The causative agent for potential plant distress is the metabolic activity of these organisms in the rhizosphere. Their type of interaction is primarily related to the production of heat-stable compounds that alter the soil pH and nutrient availability, causing indirect toxic stress to the root systems of cultivated plants.

Crops most susceptible to these conditions include vegetables and greenhouse plants grown in substrates treated with geothermal energy. Common symptoms of distress include reduced root hair development, nutrient deficiency patterns despite fertilizer application, stunted growth, and a tendency for the plant to wilt during peak metabolic periods due to impaired water uptake.

Spread occurs predominantly via poorly treated irrigation water from thermal sources or the reuse of non-sterilized substrates that have remained in the high-temperature range necessary for the archaea to thrive.

Preventive measures focus on managing the thermal environment of the root zone and ensuring the quality of irrigation inputs. Agronomic strategies include balancing the soil microflora, using specialized additives to buffer chemical shifts, and implementing rigorous water filtration and cooling protocols for greenhouse systems relying on geothermal energy.
