Description

Thiotrichales is an order of gammaproteobacteria comprising sulfur-oxidizing organisms that are essential for sulfur cycling in nature. In agronomy, however, these bacteria can become problematic when soil conditions favor their excessive accumulation on the root systems of cultivated plants, leading to a disruption of nutrient uptake.

The type of damage caused is essentially a bacterial colonization that shifts the local chemical balance of the rhizosphere. Under conditions of poor drainage or soil compaction, these bacteria thrive, often forming biofilms on roots that impede the plant's ability to absorb water and essential minerals.

Crops most frequently affected include paddy rice, hydroponic greenhouse vegetables, and plants growing in waterlogged, organic-rich soils. The main symptoms are characterized by a grayish-white microbial film on the roots, chlorosis, stunting of the plant, and in severe cases, the necrosis of the distal parts of the root system.

The development of these bacterial populations is strictly linked to anaerobic conditions. When oxygen levels in the soil drop, sulfur compounds accumulate, triggering a bloom of Thiotrichales. These microorganisms thrive in environments where organic matter decomposition is stagnant and redox potential is consistently low.
