Description
Thyrostroma canker is a destructive fungal disease caused by the pathogen Stigmina compacta (also known as Thyrostroma compactum). This condition is classified as a bark canker, which causes localized tissue necrosis, disrupting the vascular system of the host tree and potentially leading to the death of affected branches or the entire specimen.
The primary host for this pathogen is the Elm tree (genus Ulmus). The disease is frequently observed in ornamental landscapes, nurseries, and forest stands. It typically exploits weakened or stressed trees, though it can also colonize healthy specimens if they have open wounds or sites of injury that allow the pathogen to enter the cortical tissue.
The symptoms of Thyrostroma canker include the appearance of sunken or depressed necrotic lesions on the bark. As the disease progresses, these lesions develop into cracks and fissures. Small, black fungal fruiting bodies, known as sporodochia, emerge through the bark surface. These structures produce spores that are responsible for the secondary infection cycles throughout the growing season.
Environmental conditions play a crucial role in the development of the disease. High humidity, rainfall, and moderate temperatures create ideal conditions for spore dispersal and germination. The infection is primarily spread through wind and rain splash, settling into existing bark wounds, sunscald areas, or insect-damaged sites, which serve as entry points for the mycelium.
The impact of this disease is significant, resulting in the loss of aesthetic value, canopy dieback, and increased vulnerability to other stressors. Chronic infections weaken the structural integrity of the Elm branches, posing safety risks in urban areas. Without effective control measures, the cankers can girdle entire stems, causing irreversible damage to the tree's vascular transport system.

- Prompt pruning and disposal of infected limbs to reduce inoculum pressure.
- Sanitizing pruning equipment with alcohol or bleach between cuts to prevent cross-contamination.
- Treating minor bark injuries with appropriate wound dressings or sealants.

- Maintaining tree vigor through proper irrigation and soil nutrient management.
