Thyrostroma compactum is a microscopic fungus classified within the kingdom Fungi, phylum Ascomycota, and genus Thyrostroma. This specific phytopathogen is primarily known as the causative agent of bark necrosis and canker diseases on linden trees (Tilia species), leading to significant structural damage to the host.

The primary hosts for this pathogen are various species of linden. The disease typically manifests as localized necrotic lesions on the bark of branches and stems. As the infection progresses, the infected bark becomes cracked and sunken, eventually exposing the wood and creating deep cankers that disrupt nutrient transport, which often leads to the death of the distal parts of the tree.

The biological cycle of the fungus is closely linked to environmental moisture. It overwinters as mycelium and fungal structures within the bark of infected trees. During spring and early summer, triggered by rainy weather, the fungus produces conidia, which are then dispersed by wind and rain droplets to colonize new parts of the host or nearby trees through small fissures or wounds.

Development and proliferation of Thyrostroma compactum are heavily favored by high humidity and excessive rainfall. Trees weakened by environmental stressors, such as drought, urban air pollution, or improper soil conditions, show higher susceptibility to infection, as their defensive mechanisms are compromised, allowing the pathogen to penetrate deeper into the cortical tissues.

The management of this disease requires an integrated approach to maintain tree vitality and minimize the fungal load in the environment. Recommended control measures include:

  • Rigorous sanitary pruning of infected branches with immediate removal from the site.
  • Application of copper-based fungicides during the dormant season and early spring.
  • Disinfection of pruning tools to prevent mechanical transmission of the pathogen.
  • General maintenance practices to reduce tree stress, including balanced fertilization and irrigation.
