Description

Pathogen and disease type. Dwarf bunt of wheat is caused by the basidiomycete fungus Tilletia controversa. It is a highly specialized and destructive disease. The pathogen is characterized by its extreme persistence in the soil, as teliospores can remain viable for over a decade, making it a long-term threat to agricultural production and a target for quarantine regulations in many regions.

Susceptible crops. The primary host for this fungus is winter wheat. However, the pathogen can also infect other cereals such as winter rye, barley, and various wild grasses. The disease typically manifests in patches, appearing most frequently in areas with cool, wet autumns and prolonged snow cover which provides the specific microclimate necessary for the infection process.

Symptoms and signs. The most characteristic symptom is the dramatic stunting of infected plants, which grow only to a fraction of the height of healthy ones. These stunted plants exhibit excessive tillering, creating a brush-like appearance. The infected spikes are typically distorted, and the kernels are replaced by masses of black, powdery spores that emit a distinct, fishy odor caused by trimethylamine.

Conditions for development. The infection cycle of Tilletia controversa is strictly dependent on environmental factors. The spores require cool temperatures, generally between 0°C and 5°C, and high moisture to germinate. A stable, long-lasting snow cover is essential as it protects the fungus from freezing while maintaining the cool temperatures required for the colonization of winter wheat seedlings.

Economic impact and control. Dwarf bunt significantly reduces grain yield and quality, often rendering the harvest unsuitable for consumption due to spore contamination. Integrated management includes:

  • Planting resistant or tolerant wheat cultivars.
  • Implementing effective crop rotation cycles.
  • Treating seeds with appropriate systemic fungicides.
  • Avoiding early sowing dates and management practices that promote thick, succulent growth before winter dormancy.
