Description
Crotalaria mosaic virus, scientifically classified as Tobamovirus crotalariae, is a highly contagious plant pathogen belonging to the Virgaviridae family. Due to its stable rod-shaped morphology, it is exceptionally resilient against environmental stress, allowing it to persist in soil and agricultural residue for extended periods.
The virus primarily affects plant species within the Fabaceae family, particularly the genus Crotalaria. Once the virus enters the plant cell, it replicates rapidly, moving systemically through the vascular tissues and severely disrupting the metabolic pathways, which leads to stunted development and physiological stress.
Characteristic symptoms of the infection include a distinct mosaic pattern with light and dark green mottling on the foliage. Leaves often exhibit signs of curling, crinkling, or general reduction in size. Infected plants typically display internodal shortening, reduced flower production, and, in severe cases, the complete abortion of reproductive structures.
Transmission occurs almost exclusively through mechanical contact. Any interaction where sap from an infected plant touches a wounded healthy plant—such as pruning, harvesting, or human handling—facilitates the spread. Additionally, contaminated tools and machinery are frequent vectors for transmitting the virus throughout an entire field or greenhouse.
Since there are no curative antiviral chemical treatments for plants, integrated management relies strictly on rigorous preventative measures:
- Sourcing only certified virus-free seeds and planting material.
- Implementing strict sanitation protocols for all pruning and cultivation tools using specialized disinfectant solutions.
- Immediate removal and destruction of symptomatic plants to prevent secondary transmission.
- Maintaining a clean field environment by removing weeds that may harbor the virus and practicing a robust crop rotation scheme.
