Tolypothrix is a genus of filamentous cyanobacteria that, when proliferating uncontrollably, acts as a biological stressor for various agricultural crops. While these organisms are beneficial in natural ecosystems, in intensive farming, they can create significant surface crusting issues.
The causative mechanism involves the rapid growth of these cyanobacteria on wet soil surfaces, facilitated by constant moisture and light. By forming dense, mucilaginous mats, they physically interfere with soil structure, leading to reduced porosity and restricted gas exchange essential for healthy root development.
Crops most frequently affected include nursery seedlings, greenhouse vegetables, and paddy rice. In these environments, the combination of high humidity and artificial irrigation cycles creates a perfect micro-habitat for the organism, allowing it to colonize the topsoil layer rapidly.
Typical symptoms include the appearance of dark green or brownish, slippery biofilms on the surface of the growing medium. This layer can lead to seedling damping-off, stunted growth, and visible discoloration of stems that come into direct contact with the contaminated soil surface.
Integrated pest and algae management includes implementing precise irrigation schedules to avoid prolonged surface wetness, mechanical cultivation to break up biofilm layers, and the use of targeted algaecides. Maintaining optimal greenhouse ventilation and implementing proper crop rotation are essential preventive steps to manage and mitigate the spread of these cyanobacteria.
