Description
Tomato ringspot is a serious plant disease caused by the Tomato ringspot virus (ToRSV), a nepovirus with a very wide host range. The pathogen is known for its persistence and ability to cause systemic infection, often leading to severe agricultural losses across various commercial crops.
The virus affects numerous plant species, ranging from vegetables like tomatoes and peppers to woody perennials and soft fruits. Significantly, it is a recognized pathogen in cranberry production, where it impairs vine vigor and reduces fruit set, requiring careful monitoring to preserve the plantation's health.
Symptoms typically manifest as chlorotic spots, distinct rings, or line patterns on leaves. In severe cases, infected plants exhibit stunted growth, leaf distortion, and necrosis. The reproductive success of the plant is often compromised, leading to malformed or underdeveloped fruit and reduced overall yield potential.
Transmission occurs primarily through soil-borne nematodes of the genus Xiphinema, which acquire the virus while feeding on infected roots. Additionally, the virus can be disseminated via infected pollen or seeds and through mechanical transmission during pruning or cultivation practices if equipment is not sanitized.
Management strategies focus on prevention, as there is no direct cure for viral infections once established. Recommended practices include:
