Description
Carrot torradovirus (Torradovirus carotae) is a relatively recently described viral pathogen affecting carrot crops. The causative agent is a virus from the Torradovirus genus, belonging to the Secoviridae family. This infection poses a serious threat to commercial production, as viral diseases in carrots often present with latent characteristics during the early stages, making timely diagnosis difficult.
The primary host crop is the carrot (Daucus carota). Despite its narrow host range, the virus can significantly reduce the marketable quality of the taproots, rendering the produce unsuitable for sale and long-term storage. Infection of the crop can lead to yield losses ranging from 30% to 70%, depending on the level of infection pressure in the field.
Symptoms of the infection manifest as chlorotic mosaic patterns on the leaves, deformation of leaf blades, and overall stunted growth of the plant. In some cases, reddening of the foliage, premature senescence of the leaves, and a significant reduction in the size of the root are observed. Visually, infected plants stand out due to their distinct habit, trailing behind healthy plants in development.
The virus is transmitted by insect vectors, specifically aphids and certain species of psyllids, which feed on the sap of infected plants. Conditions favoring the mass reproduction of these vectors directly influence the rate of virus spread across the field. High planting density and the presence of weed hosts that act as reservoirs for the infection contribute to disease outbreaks.
There are no effective chemical methods to directly combat the virus during the growing season; therefore, protection relies heavily on preventive measures. The most critical step is managing the population of insect vectors through timely insecticide applications. It is also recommended to use disease-free planting material, maintain spatial isolation from older carrot fields, and rigorously eliminate weeds that may serve as primary sources of infection.
