Trichormus is a genus of filamentous cyanobacteria that, under certain environmental conditions, can act as a stressor or pathogen in agricultural settings. While some cyanobacteria are known for nitrogen fixation, an excessive bloom of Trichormus in crop fields is generally detrimental, creating competition with crops for light, oxygen, and nutrients.
The primary crops affected are aquatic or semi-aquatic plants, most notably rice (Oryza sativa). The growth of these bacteria often results in thick surface mats in paddy fields, which physically hinder the emergence of seedlings and create an anaerobic environment in the soil, preventing normal gas exchange for the plant root systems.
Symptoms of a Trichormus infestation include the formation of slimy, blue-green, or brownish films on the water surface or soil crust. Affected plants often exhibit signs of stress, such as stunted growth, leaf yellowing (chlorosis), and a reduced capacity for tillering. Severe cases can lead to root necrosis and significant stand loss during early development.
The development and spread of Trichormus are driven by stagnant water, high solar radiation, and nutrient-rich environments, particularly those with high phosphorus concentrations. These conditions facilitate rapid cell division and the formation of large colonies that quickly colonize the field, making management challenging once a bloom has reached a significant scale.
Preventative and control strategies are essential to mitigate the impact of this organism on yield. Key measures include maintaining proper water circulation and drainage to prevent stagnation, applying regulated doses of fertilizers to avoid nutrient runoff, and the timely application of approved algaecides. Regular field monitoring is critical to detect early-stage bacterial blooms before they cause substantial economic damage.
