Wheat streak mosaic is a devastating viral disease affecting cereals, caused by the Triticum mosaic virus (TriMV) or the Wheat streak mosaic virus (WSMV). This pathogen is known to be a significant threat to global wheat production, causing severe economic losses.

The primary crop affected is winter wheat. However, the virus has a wide range of alternative hosts, including various species of wild grasses that serve as reservoirs for the virus and the mite vectors during the off-season.

Symptoms typically manifest as yellow streaks and mottling on leaves, which may eventually lead to necrosis. Infected plants often show stunting, reduced tiller production, and poor head development, significantly impacting the grain filling process and overall harvest weight.

The virus is transmitted by the wheat curl mite, Aceria tosichella. These microscopic pests carry the virus from infected volunteer wheat or grasses to newly emerged seedlings. The spread is highly dependent on environmental conditions, specifically warm, dry autumns that promote mite dispersal.

Effective disease management relies on cultural practices and integrated pest management. Key strategies include eliminating "green bridges" (volunteer wheat), adjusting planting dates to avoid peak mite movement, and selecting wheat varieties with higher resistance levels. Chemical control is limited primarily to the management of mite populations.
