Description

Tropaeolum mosaic is a viral plant disease caused by the Tropaeolum mosaic virus (TMV). This pathogen acts as an obligate parasite, invading plant cells and disrupting their physiological processes, which typically results in stunted growth and distorted foliage in susceptible host plants.

While the virus primarily targets various species of Tropaeolum (nasturtiums), it has a wider host range that can include other decorative and agricultural crops. The virus survives within the tissues of infected plants and can be passed on to subsequent generations through vegetative propagation, creating a persistent threat in home gardens and nurseries.

The most visible sign of infection is the characteristic mosaic pattern on the leaves, featuring alternating patches of dark green, light green, or yellow. In severe cases, the foliage becomes puckered, crinkled, or dwarfed. Affected plants often produce fewer flowers, and the blooms themselves may show streaks or colour breaking, significantly reducing the plant's aesthetic value.

Transmission of the virus is primarily achieved through insect vectors, most notably aphids. These insects acquire the virus while feeding on infected sap and transmit it to healthy plants during their next feeding session. Additionally, the virus can be spread mechanically; sap containing the virus can be transferred via contaminated pruning tools, garden machinery, or even by brushing against infected and healthy plants simultaneously.

Currently, there is no curative treatment available for plants infected with Tropaeolum mosaic virus. Management strategies must focus on strict preventative measures, including the destruction of symptomatic plants to reduce the reservoir of infection, effective aphid control programmes, and the rigorous disinfection of gardening tools after each use. Sourcing seeds or cuttings from certified virus-free suppliers remains the most effective long-term defense.
